This is a beautiful Songye statue from the Democratic Republic. The Songye made powerful figures to combat witchcraft and sorcery. They were benign and believed to be good, to promote fertility and success, to defeat enemies and to protect against evil. Large ones were owned and served the community; small ones were for individual families.
